Running an FEBio Simulation in PreView

It is possible to run an FEBio simulation within FEBio Studio. This is recommend for users who are unfamiliar with their system’s terminal (sometimes called the “command line” or “command prompt”).

  1. Open the PreView file that you created during the previous tutorial.
  2. Open the Run FEBio dialog by selecting Tools -> Run FEBio from the menu, by right clicking on the Run FEBio button located in the top toolbar, or by pressing F5.
  3. The Working directory text field is the directory into which the input, log, and output files for your simulation will be placed. By default these files will be put into the same directory in which you saved your PreView file. You may change this if you wish.
  4. In order for FEBio to run a simulation, an FEBio input file (a .feb file) must first be created with the information from your PreView file. The Filename text field shows the name that will be given to the FEBio input file. By default it will be given the same name as your PreView file. You may change this if you wish.
  5. Click the Run button to begin the simulation.

Information about the simulation will be displayed in the Output panel located at the bottom of the window.

If no problems arise during the simulation, a dialog box should appear informing you that the simulation terminated normally.

You should now continue on to the next tutorial Performing your first analysis in FEBio Studio.

Running an FEBio Simulation in the Terminal

This section assumes that you already have a basic understanding of how to use your system’s terminal.

In order for FEBio to run a simulation, an FEBio input file (a .feb file) must first be created with the information from your PreView file.

  1. Open the PreView file that you created during the previous tutorial.
  2. Export your model as an FEBio input file by selecting File -> Export FE model from the menu. This will open a Save As dialog box. Use that dialog to name your input file, and save it in an appropriate location.

Now that an FEBio input file has been created, you can run it in a terminal.

  1. Open your system’s terminal and navigate to the directory in which you saved your FEBio input file.
  2. If FEBio was installed correctly, it should have added the FEBio install directory to your system’s PATH. Start your simulation by running the following command “febio2 -i fileName.feb”, where “fileName.feb” is the path to your FEBio input file.

Information about the simulation will be displayed in terminal as the simulation progresses.

If no problems arise during the simulation, FEBio should print “Normal Termination” before exiting.
